Alright, I did some looking around and found this on the Ubuntu site.

System requirements

Ubuntu is available for PC, 64-Bit PC and Intel-based Mac architectures. At least 256 MB of RAM is required to run the alternate install CD (384MB of RAM is required to use the live CD based installer). Install requires at least 4 GB of disk space.

So I shouldn't have any problem running it on my AMD Athlon.

Yeah Moe, download the .iso file and burn it to a CD with a program like Imgburn. It should do just fine on the system that you described.

Well I'll be darned, never did anything with an iso file before but I opened nero and it had an option to copy image so I chose that and dragged the file into nero and it took right off.
after it got done I put the CD in the computer and started her up, it took 3 reboots before it finally loaded but it ran, the only thing, I could not get to this forum, firefox loaded ok but I couldn't get here with it, maybe because I was running it from the CD ??.
I have a 10 gig HD that's empty, if I set it as master and format it will I be able to install ubuntu on it.

I am not sure why it took 3 reboots to load.......... it should have fired up the first time. Are you connecting to the internet wirelessly, or do you have an Ethernet card (NIC card)?

If you want to install it, just let me know and I can help you with it, Moe.

Hi, I have an Ethernet card, I tried to install it but it failed, I have the spare HD, ran Fdisk on it and formatted it but when I try to install Ubuntu it keeps failing, I ran the check disk in the Ubuntu start up screen and it said the disk was fine.

It's a machine that was given to me and the plate on the front has, AMD Athlon XP, it's the original MB, and cpu, I put the rest together, power supply, 2 HDs, 2 CDs, and an ethernet card, got XP home on the main HD, and have the spare drive set up as slave.

It's a machine I use to play around with trying different things, that's why I want to put Ubuntu on the spare drive, so I can play around with it.

Well, I think that you'll need to create some blank, free space on your drive and try to install it there.... it will install it to that drive, but put the MBR (Master Boot Record) where it says to, by default. I think that it will be on your primary drive. Let me know if that doesn't work...

Well I tried something, I hooked that drive up as master, then booted the machine with a win 98 boot disk, then ran fdisk and deleted the partition but I didn't format it, took the boot disk out and rebooted the machine with the Ubuntu disk and after clicking on install I told it to use the whole drive and it loaded right up, it now boots from that drive and I have Ubuntu up and running.

Yes, sometimes putting it on a secondary drive can cause issues with the MBR. Glad that you got it sorted out, Moe. Hope that you like Ubuntu!

Well, from what I've seen so far it's going to take quite a bit of getting used to, but we'll see how it goes.

It isn't hard once you've tried it a bit. Just ask a way and I will be happy to help you as needed.

No...as I understand it, you don't need any. And there is no need to defrag.

No defragging, no anti-virus, no firewall needed.
