Help With Installing Apps In Ubuntu 8.10!

Barney, we downloaded Banshee to the desktop and extracted it to a folder there...but it doesn't seem to have an install as I know it! (the folder has a bunch of sub-folder and files)

What did we do wrong in this alien realm? confuse

Thanks,
Alan

Alan,

The best way to install software in Ubuntu is to use Synaptic. Just open it System > Administration > Synaptic and search for Banshee. Click the check box, click the apply check mark and it will install itself. Look through the list of software. There are tons of software to install that way. We can go over other ways to install software once you try this!

Then you can delete those files on your desktop.

Remember also to "Reload" Synaptic (upper left button) and click "Upgrade" and Apply" to refresh your software list and apply all new versions.

Using Synaptic

Barney

I suggest downloading it and burning it with Imgburn. It burns the .iso image so that you can put the CD in your computer and run it!

Thanks for the link.

Barney : as vindi said , it is about 700MG download , so I prefer to have original CD with 6-10 weeks shipment time.

what is Kubuntu and Edubuntu ?
How can I check if Ubuntu supports " persian ( Farsi ) language ?

Thanks

There are several 'themes" for Ubuntu or any other Linux version. They are called "desktop managers (DM). The most common ones are KDE, Gnome, Fluxbox, XFCE, as well as others. Ubuntu comes with the Gnome DM. Kubuntu comes with KDE as the DM. Xubuntu comes with XFCE. Edubuntu also uses Gnome. Edubuntu is an educational version of Ubuntu.

Take a look here.
I think you'll get to select your language when you install.
(Right, Barney???)

These are instructions for Alan on how to get to and use Synaptic........

1) Boot up Ubuntu.

2) Go to the bottom tool bar and click System -> Administration -> Synaptic (the menu may be slightly different, but look and you'll find it)

3) Click on Synaptic

4) It will ask you for your password (what you log in with)

5) When the Synaptic GUI window opens, go to the search window in the upper right corner and type in "Banshee" (no quotes). Press enter.

6) A list with Banshee will populate. Click the check box next to Banshee. At the top of the box, click the green Apply check. It will install the application for you.

Please look at this link for visual pictures of the process -----> Synaptic Package Manager

Great! Synaptic has tons and tons of software you can download. I recommend k3b for CD burning, Abiword for a word processor, and MPlayer for videos and such.

Remember also to "Reload" Synaptic (upper left button) and click "Upgrade" and Apply" to refresh your software list and apply all new versions. It updates all of the software on your computer.

Let me know what else I can do!
