10 Free "Must Have" Windows Security Downloads

I hear "free"...........

To use an Internet-connected computer is to be insecure and place your privacy in danger. Spyware, viruses, Trojans and assorted malware are everywhere on the Net, trying to hop onto your PC and cause damage. Snoopers want to get at your personal information for nefarious purposes, such as identity theft.

Operating systems of all kinds are under assault, but the prime target is Windows, because the vast majority of PCs worldwide use that operating system. If you use Windows, hackers have you in their cross hairs.

Of the items on the list, how many actually do the folks here really have on their machines?

I have Avast, and that is the only thing from their list of 10. I do have Spybot S&D and the malwarebytes that Alan mentioned above, but not Hijack This or SpywareBlaster.

Imho McAfee has nothing that someone else hasn't done better.

I would really like to know what our members think of the list. I know that there is a thread where members put their favorite free stuff, and I learned a lot from those lists.

To be honest, it really depends on the operating system that you use and the skills that you have to secure your system. Linux needs none of it. Vista already has a pretty good firewall and a user control system that requires permission to install programs (thereby not allowing rogue programs to install for the most part).

Any Microsoft OS's before Vista are at greater risk, if you use a default account that has administrative privileges on by default. I totally detest McAfee. I use Avast also and like that much better. I also only use Firefox and use their add-on "No-Script" (there are rogue scripts on websites that can overwrite or create havoc with any Windows system)..

Hi, I can only comment on what I use in this list: Avast (with only Firefox), HijackThis (this is only a diagnostic tool and not for the average user), Blacklight, and CCleaner.

Getting by fine here with Windows Firewall, Norton System Works w/Antivirus, WinPatrol Plus, SpywareBlaster, and HiJackThis & Everest when working on an infected computer.

With Avast...I would also suggest a boot-time scan once-a-month on any Windows-based machine.

Also with Windows, an anti-rootkit has become almost standard equipment.
Blacklight, RootkitRevealer, and Sophos are what I use regularly.

Thanks for the list Beetle...I also have IceSword (which I did not mention).
It gives a huge amount of information on what is going on inside your PC.

In other words , are those programs necessary for anyone who use internet ?
I use 4-5 programs (AVG antivirus + ccleaner + zonealarm + win utility + spybot and from yesterday , win Patrol ) and so far have not have any problems, Thanks my God.

I totally agree...a made-up word that is over-used.
Another one is guesstimate. A made-up word that means the same as the one it is supposed to replace!
