The registry of a Windows computer controls how the operating system uses programs, and as such it’s a very critical file. The Windows 7 registry is no different. If there are problems in the registry, it’s not exclusive for a computer to become less stable, which, as you might imagine, causes blue screens, crashes, lock-ups, and general slowdown. The good news is that like any other file, the registry can be changed, cleaned, and edited to make it function better. But before you do any of that, it’s wise to originate a backup of the registry in case something goes wrong.
1. Click on “Start”. Go to “Run.” In this field, you’re going to type “Regedit”, and hit enter. This opens up the Windows 7 registry editor–note that you want to be careful here. If you don’t know what you’re doing, you could potentially damage the stability of your system. If you follow these instructions, though, you’ll have nothing to worry about, just don’t stray too powerful off the beaten path.
2. In the left pane of the window, click “Computer.” Hit “File,” then “Export.” A copy of the Windows 7 registry will be saved to any place you want to put it. You could determine to simply place the registry on your desktop, but that’s not very safe. What if you lose access to the desktop? Instead, effect the backed up registry to an external hard drive or external flash drive. Alternately, if you don’t have either of those things, you could set aside the registry on your computer, then burn a CD with the registry on it.
3. That’s pretty considerable it. Elegant cool, eh? Repeat this process any time you want to back up the registry of your Windows 7 computer. You should abet up before making any changes, or before running any registry cleaners or doing any other major changes to your computer.
