The Xbox 360 dashboard is not the only thing that’s getting a fresh coat of paint. Xbox.com is in for a major change tomorrow (October 20, 2010). Starting at 5:00am eastern time, Xbox.com and the Xbox forums will not be accessible for a little while. Xbox Live however will not be affected by this upgrade.
Major Nelson has outlined some of the big changes coming to Xbox.com on his blog. One such feature is an online avatar editor. Now you’ll be able to customize your avatar from your computer. You’ll also be able to preview avatar items before spending your hard earned Microsoft Points.
Another new feature is the ability to play certain web games with people on your Xbox Live friends list. You can participate in these games on the web, or on Windows Phone 7.
Here are a few more additions to Xbox.com.
Combined views for messages, friend and game requests
Improved notification of your account subscription
Leverage Family Reports to understand what your family is doing and how they are using LIVE
Marketplace: More powerful search and more intuitive ways to browse and filter
Notice the continued emphasis on making all things Xbox easier for families. Microsoft is well on its way in transforming what was once considered the most hardcore gaming console, into the most user friendly. Microsoft should have no trouble getting the word out about the Xbox 360 given the enormous amount of money it’s spending to market Kinect.
