E-readers
Permalink

Does anyone have any advice on e-readers?  In doing some research, CNET has their favorite, PC World has their favorite, etc.  It didn't seem like there was any consistency.  I was trying to see what Consumer Reports said, but you have to subscribe and I wasn't going to do that.

I can e-read on my iPad, but the office is looking to purchase an e-reader for someone who is retiring who loves to read a lot.  I was put in charge of figuring out which one.

Since the lunch is on the 10th, I will need to come up with something early next week to make sure I can get it in time.  I do know that I don't want to get one of the pocket sized ones.  The retiree wouldn't care for something that small.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

My eldest daughter has the "Nook"...it is very readable and batteries last days without recharge.
It is not back-lit and reads with external light.

Vin, I had looked at that site too. Again, different number 1 than the others, BUT had the best comparison viewing.

What I find interesting in all of the reviews is that they are relatively old. There have been updates and a new kindle just came out, and I have not found any sites that have compared the new kindle. Some, and the site Vin listed say that they look at the reader again if there is an update. I don't know that is true with all of them.

Nicknayme, what made your daughter go with the nook vs something else? Does she like it? What doesn't she like about it?

Particularly the display and battery life.

Nice thing...there is a Barnes & Noble in Appleton to take a look!

I don't believe you ever mentioned what you settled-on and how satisfied you are with it?

I would like to buy an eBook reader for the wife...so it would be helpful to hear what you learned or settled-on.

Thanks,
Alan

Hey Barney,  as Christmas draws nearer and you are our "Mobile Device Maestro" do you have 1st-hand knowledge of a good eBook?

It seems the majority likes Kindle 3 and that's where I am leaning at this point.

Thanks,
Alan

Hey Alan,

I do not use a Kindle, but I hear good things about them. The Kindle 3 sounds like a good bet, btu if you can get your hands on one first to try it before you buy it, that would probably be your best bet!

Happy Christmas Shopping!

Yep -- I'd opt for the top-rated Kindle 3 too.

You might also want to try out the Nook Color E-Reader. A friend at work has that and it isn't too shabby!

A nice app for eReaders (eBooks) is Calibre. (It's like iTunes for eBooks).
