Of course you know I would have to disagree with this.......
Building my own computers for many years has taught me that you may not always get a better deal, per se, but you can get exactly what you want and in the configuration you want it. Also, you get the knowledge of how you make these boxes work and how to troubleshoot them.
Then, when you want to upgrade, you can pick and choose components to add without buying new computers or taking to your local shop to get parts replaced (for a high fee).....
And, as far as the OS goes, I use Linux (free) as well as multiple licenses from my Technet account. No real issue getting a Windows install if I need it.
Of late, #1 Son has kept us in good computers from his Pawn Shop but if I were 'in the market' for a Desktop right now, I'd go for this one or maybe even this one from 'New Egg'.
I admire the 'do-it-yourself' builds you & 'Desperado' have accomplished over the years but there's no way (for me) to justify spending the money & trouble it'd take to equal one of these.
My 1st PC was an HP and my oldest had an HP laptop...nothing good to say. I am only suggesting about what is out there now...not what you have dealt with in the past. Except for your new laptop, your stuff is old like mine (I believe). No offense.

Can't argue with that -- but you can get a new computer today & it'll be obsolete before you get it home!! Just know that I'm perfectly content with my "antique" Desktop!
I am also satisfied with mine. Does it do everything I need it to do? Yes. Am I proud of it? No. Would I like a new one? Yes. Will it happen this year? Maybe.
