Absolutely. Just stick it in the CD / DVD rom and boot it up. You can play with it without installing it into your computer. When you are done, take the CD out of the drive and reboot. Your hard drive isn't touched!
Yeah! Just remember that the performance will be slower when running off the CD because the access time is greater. When installed on the hard drive, it is much much speedier.
I downloaded Ubuntu 9.04 Desktop (32-bit) ISO this morning & will be burning it to CD as soon as I get a few minutes (and after verifying the md5 sum). Was tied-up this morning going to Lowes for Sunroom materials and gassing-up the VW Bus for another trip to the lakehouse! If anyone wants a copy of the CD, let me know & furnish your mailing address.
Excellent. Enjoy the new experience. Just remember that Ubuntu is NOT Windows, so expect a slightly different feel and experience. Everything you see on it should work well for you. If you are using dial-up, you may have some trouble (maybe). It works flawlessly with broadband or DSL hook-ups!
The Ubuntu support community is very helpful: Ubuntu support. And you can always post here too...
Have verified the checksum & burned the master CD. Norton Antivirus gives the CD a clean bill-of-health!! Will be trying Ubuntu 9.04 from the CD on the bedroom computer first -- then on the Lakehouse computer to replace Windows ME.
Any of those players are fine. You just need to download them from Synaptic (Ubuntu's package manager) and they will install. Open them up and use them! Once you get your computer, just holler and I'll help you with it. BTW, I am using my Ubuntu netbook right now!

Thanks for pointing us to Synaptic, Barney!! Have been running Ubuntu from the CD on our main computer to get familiar with it -- so far it's running flawlessly! Am about ready to install it 'dual-boot' with Windows XP SP3 on the bedroom computer and burn another CD for the Lakehouse. ...and thanks also for introducing us to Ubuntu!!!
No problem at all. You do not need to install Synaptic (it is already part of Ubuntu). I can help answer all of your questions, if need be. Dual booting is a great way to have the best of both worlds. Just make sure tht XP is on first, then install Ubuntu to unpartitoned free space. It will set up everything for you. Use the defaults if you get a choice. Let me know how it goes.

Thanks Barney!! Didn't get to work with Ubuntu yesterday -- Almaretta & I got sidetracked with replacing the Greatroom & Bedroom TVs with LCD versions from Sam's Club. Sam's beat-out Newegg for the business -- unusual!!
From what I see so far, I like Ubuntu! Accidentally installed it on hard drive when I intended to run it from the CD but removed it to correct that goof. Haven't had much time to play with Ubuntu -- been getting these two new LCD Digital TVs setup and running on Direct TV. Thanks for your help, Barney!!

Just remember, Ubuntu (as well as all other Linux distros) require no extra firewalls, no virus protection, no defragging, and the system completely updates itself with Synaptic (no need for individual program updates).
Oh man! I am so sorry to here that. Ubuntu should see the WAN as soon as it is plugged in. There is an icon in the system tray that sets up everything. I will find the link and post it here.
