Hey Barn, I can see the connection but it won't connect. I have an Ad-Hoc using Dial-up (pls don't laugh) and it works with other XP machines. Unlike XP...the OS doesn't tell me what area of config. is wrong.
MyNetwork(automatic) Authentication-Open Encryption-WEP Key is provided automatically
It "sees" a strong signal and tries to connect but fails.
Hey Barn, all I had to do was reboot and it found the WLAN! I didn't have time to mess with it this morning. It's working very well with Firefox...and hopefully she will get used-to-it and like it. She does like the games!
Thanks, Alan

Remind her that no need for normal Windows things.... anti-virus, defrag, etc. You can even download Frostwire (if you want it).
Sometimes it takes just a bit of research to get the more obscure things up and running, but the system is stable, fast, and secure! It isn't Windows, but she can configure it exactly as she would like it.

Well, after working one day...wireless won't connect and is now grayed-out. I uninstalled the driver and re-installed. Restart...still grayed-out. The set-up how-to's are not the same. (Barney's help sites) The selections are not the same (different version?) Networking is checked-wireless grayed and unselectable. Guess I will have to call Dell and see if the wifi failed.
Alan, if you can give me the computer model and the version of Ubuntu you are using, I am sure that I can help you fix it. Just let me know. Asking Dell is indeed an option. Just let me know what I can do to help get you up and running.
Well things are always better in the morning! I read the set-up manual and the "wireless key" (used to disable it when you take-off in a plane for instance) must have been pressed.
There is always panic when dealing with a teenager!
Hey Barney, she is starting to like it more and more...I hate a touchpad anyway, but it freaks me out when it moves to another screen...and then you have to get it to come back! Also, preferences set-up differently on Firefox in Ubuntu (in the EDIT drop-down)
Well, Ubuntu takes a little bit of getting used to........ after all it isn't Windows. I remember an expression that I once heard that went like this: Windows chaufers (spelled wrong) you around the internet and your computer, Linux hands you the keys.
Edit: It's me, Barney. I just can't seem to log on here at work.......
Glad you're able to log-in as 'Anonymous', Barney!! ...and glad you're up-and-running, Alan!!! Alan -- if you'd like for me to send you a Ubuntu 9.04 CD, get me your snail mail address & I'll burn one for you! (It's a long download for dial-up!)
