Hundreds of personal Gmail accounts, including those of some senior U.S. government officials, were hacked as a result of a massive phishing scheme originating from China, Google said Wednesday.
Washington scrambled on Thursday to assess whether security had been compromised after Google revealed a major hacker attack targeting U.S. officials that the Internet giant pegged to China.
Hackers who broke into Google's Gmail system had access to some accounts for many months and could have been planning a more serious attack, said the cyber-security expert who first publicly revealed the incident.
